HISTORY

Company History

During 1982 Bernd Schuttler started a print finishing company in Cape Town. This was one of the first print finishing companies in the country and one of only two in Cape Town. Over the following 12 years, he expanded his offering by adding blisterpak varnish and spot UV varnish on a converted printing press.

During 1994 Bernd decided to sell his print finishing company and venture into a new field. Leon Kaimowitz and Paul Hastilow bought the company and merged it with Ultra Varnishing Services, a print finishing company started by Reinardt Pieper two years earlier. Paul Hastilow came up with the new name, United Varnish & Print Finishing (Pty) Ltd, after the merger of the two operations and led to the establishing of the company in 1995 to provide the printing industry with top-quality, efficient and cost effective UV varnishing and print finishing services. In 2014, the operations of United Varnish & Print Finishing (Pty) Ltd was merged with Veltopak (Pty) Ltd and the merged entity started trading as UVP Veltopak (Pty) Ltd, a print finishing company with visions of expanding significantly into the package market. In this process UVP also welcomed Gerber Goldschmidt Group (SA) (Pty) Ltd as a significant shareholder.

To keep pace with the growing demand for our services, we purchased four state of the art machines solely dedicated to spot varnishing. Our acquisition of a rotary silkscreen for spot UV varnishing, rewettable glue and scratch-off, supports paper sizes up to a maximum of 720mm x 1020mm. These installations complement existing UV varnishing capabilities, which include roller coating machines for aqueous (water-based) varnishing applied to either gloss or matt paper and overall UV varnishing and UV to allow for glue flaps on gloss or matt paper. Newer coatings include water-based direct food contact barrier coating that can be applied on all these machines.

Our services don’t end there. As Cape Town’s leading and only one-stop print finishing shop, UVP offers an array of additional services. Our other acquisition, a Bobst machine for large format foiling (gold, silver or metallic) can accommodate maximum paper size of 720mm x 1020mm. Our die-cutting facilities include several die-cutting machines and 2 Bobst platens which automatically cut sheets up to the same size. These installations supplement existing facilities for foiling, die-cutting and embossing, including blind embossing, for all paper sizes. Further additions include automated foiling, embossing and die-cutting machines that take sheets up to size 540mm X 740mm. One machine is also fitted with a hologram attachment for security foiling. We also shrink-wrap, do make-up, score, collate and fold.

With our installations of a twin wire binding facility, we are the only finishing house in Cape Town offering this service with a combination of automated and semi-automated equipment. In recent years we have installed automatic plastic spiral binding with a wide selection of colours offered.

We have since seen the installation of our fully automated high-speed film laminating machine. This machine can run gloss, matt and soft touch laminating up to sheet size 710mm x 1020mm. This machine was the first of its kind in Africa. We have since expanded to a number of machines.

Over time we have installed new Heidelberg folding machines, a standalone Corona treater to assist in increasing the dyne level on difficult substrates and a fully automatic screen cleaning line. The Grunig screen cleaning line is as a result of our environmental concerns and a bigger emphasis being placed on ensuring the whole manufacturing process is sensitive to the needs of the environment, public and staff working with the equipment.

The past eight years have seen our aggressive expansion of our packaging product offering. We installed a corrugated flexo printing machine that can in a single pass print, slot and die cut. We invested in an additional offline die cutter up to sheet size 1450mm x 1100mm. These investments were followed five years ago by a window patching machine for window boxes and included the installation of two paper bag lines including one with handles, we can now produce both SO bags and sharp bottom bags with and without gussets. Products now also include paper bags with windows. Three years ago we installed a biodegradable drinking straw manufacturing line that can print up to two colours on the straw wrapping paper; we were the first and currently the only company in South Africa that manufactures PLA drinking straws. We believe it offers a better customer experience to paper straws. During the same period a carton erecting machine was commissioned for nested packaging to allow our customers the option to speed up the services at convenient food outlets, as well as a cutting and folding machine for biodegradable linen-like napkins.

We will continue to expand, invest in new equipment and offer our clients new innovative solutions to their printing, finishing and packaging needs. We are currently commissioning two paper cup machines to manufacture both single wall and double wall cups.

We believe that more and more clients would like a single reliable packaging supplier that can deliver the full basket of their packaging needs at a single point of contact. We realise with the single basket approach comes great responsibility to never drop the ball and to always remain competitively priced. This is one of the reasons we always hold stock for our clients and can dispatch orders within 48 hours or less.

Customers with special requests are frequently and gladly assisted in finding the perfect solution. We run 24-hour shifts, and our free collection and delivery service operates any time of the day or night, seven days a week .Now after almost forty years in the business, we have expanded and are even better equipped to meet your Print Finishing and Packaging needs.

We are dedicated to the continual expansion and improvement of our business, for the good of our clients, our workforce, and the environment which belongs to us all.
